Black Hills Energy investing to comply with renewable energy standard
Nov. 2, 2015 - Black Hills Energy - Colorado Electric announced today that it has received approval from the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to acquire a 60-megawatt, 34-turbine wind project in southern Colorado. The estimated cost of the project is $109 million, including taxes, transmission infrastructure and interconnection costs.
The utility determined that the project, called the Peak View Wind Project, is the most cost-effective solution to meet its customers energy needs while also taking an important step in the company's plans to meet Colorado's renewable energy requirement that 30 percent of Black Hills Energy's electricity come from renewable resources by 2020. The project may also help Colorado comply with the Environmental Protection Agency's new Clean Power Plan for greenhouse gases.
'The Peak View Wind Project is expected to boost the local economy by bringing new jobs to the area during construction, generating property taxes and adding six professional jobs to operate the wind project when it is placed into service,' said Christopher Burke, Black Hills Energy's vice president of Colorado electric utility operations.
Black Hills Energy selected the Peak View Wind Project through a competitive solicitation process which included financial modeling to identify the best value for customers. The project will be built approximately 30 miles south of Pueblo, Colorado, by Invenergy Wind Development Colorado. The project will be completed in late 2016 and will be operated as a utility-owned asset.
'Colorado has a wealth of renewable resources and is an incredibly important market for us,' said Mick Baird, Invenergy's Vice President of Business Development in the Western Region. 'Peak View will provide long-term, clean renewable energy to Colorado customers and we're pleased Black Hills Energy wants to take ownership of this great project.'
'This project will support our customers' energy needs at considerably less expense than other renewable options,' Burke said. 'We will continue to provide safe, reliable energy at a fair rate, and the Peak View Wind Project will help to meet these priorities on behalf of our customers.'
