Commander Cuts 91.06 G/T Gold Over 1.6 Metres In Channel Sampling On Baffin Island

Commander Resources Ltd. (CMD-TSX Venture) reports high-grade gold results from surface channel sampling and prospecting on the Hebert Prospect area, located on the Company's large Baffin Island gold property, Nunavut. Highlights include:
  • Discovery of a 1.5 kilometre long, 300-400 metre wide structural corridor; results confirm this to be a significant gold target within the 100 kilometre long Baffin Gold Property.
  • Channel sampling results of narrow quartz-arsenopyrite vein sets and stratabound semi-massive gold-bearing arsenopyrite gossans over a 200 metre portion of this corridor included several high values, the best of which contained 91.06 g/t gold over 1.6 metres (including 446.6 g/t gold over 0.3 metres).
  • Rock chip/grab sampling returned some high values including 1,388 g/t gold, 861 g/t gold, 720 g/t gold, 213.5 g/t gold and 660.3 g/t gold.
  • Less than 5% of the structural corridor has been prospected; numerous narrow quartz vein sets and gossans observed throughout this large area have not yet been evaluated, but are now a high priority.
  • 25% of 91 channel samples and 30% of 126 grab samples assayed in excess of 5 g/t gold; 7% of channel samples and 17% of grab samples assayed in excess of 30 g/t gold.
  • Considerable size potential is demonstrated by the density of mineralized quartz veins over a large area, the large number of gold showings discovered, and the percentage that contain significant gold values.

"The success of this year's low-budget program has added considerable value to our Baffin Gold project confirming our belief that we are in the midst of a significant gold district that has the potential to sustain future gold production," states Kenneth Leigh, Commander's President & CEO.

Complete results from the rock chip/grab and composite channel samples are presented on several maps available on the Company's website. These maps should be consulted in conjunction with this release.

During the three week program, 91 individual samples were taken from 29 channels cut perpendicular across eleven (11) exposed vein sets and adjacent, locally mineralized bedrock. Where possible, channels were spaced at 2-15 metre intervals along individual veins and extended into the host rock shoulders on either side of the veins. The bulk of detailed channel sampling was focused on a 200 metre x 100 metre area where a series of nine (9) steeply-dipping near-parallel vein sets, spaced approximately 5-20 metres apart with individual veins ranging from 0.1 to 0.8 metres wide, are hosted by sedimentary rocks that locally contain disseminated arsenopyrite and minor gold mineralization. Of the 91 channel samples, 36 were cut from quartz veins and 55 were cut in the hosting sediments, either from shoulders or in areas of higher concentrations of arsenopyrite.

In addition to the channel samples, 126 rock chip/grab samples were collected from small outcrops and felsenmeer (frost-heaved blocks close to an outcrop source). 39% of the samples assayed in excess of 2 g/t gold, 30% assayed in excess of 5 g/t gold and 17.5% of the samples assayed in excess of 30 g/t gold. An additional 14 single saw-cut chip samples were collected including a series of five 30-40 cm samples, which averaged 221.14 g/t gold taken from a 10 cm wide vein exposed on an outcrop face and close to three channel samples that ran 11.95 g/t gold over 1.5 metres, 2.75 g/t gold over 1.53 metres and 22.83 g/t gold over 1.0 metre.

The 1.5 kilometre corridor contains steeply-dipping quartz-arsenopyrite veins and minor stratabound semi-massive gold-bearing arsenopyrite gossans hosted by an inter-bedded sequence of greywacke and micro-conglomerate that dips 15 to 25 degrees to the east. The majority of samples were collected from an 800 metre x 400 metre area where outcrop exposure is about 30%; only 15% of this area has been evaluated. Numerous vein sets occur that require detailed sampling and mapping. The 1.5 kilometre strike length is only limited by outcrop exposure; this strong structure may well extend further in both north and south directions.

Where observed, coarse gold occurs most commonly along partings or boundaries of coarse arsenopyrite contained within quartz veins and to a lesser extent within the quartz veins themselves and within arsenopyrite in the hosting sedimentary rocks. There is an apparent silver-bismuth-lead association with the gold mineralization. An outcrop of potassic altered granite is exposed near the western margin of the corridor; it is highly fractured and cavity filled and may be related to the gold mineralization event. The mineralized corridor is parallel to an interpreted series of thrust faults, an ideal structural setting to allow emplacement of this type of quartz vein system.

Due to the irregular nature of gold distribution in this type of setting and the large area that has not yet been evaluated, Commander's next program will include close-spaced systematic channel sampling of the mineralized outcrops, detailed prospecting/sampling traverses across the strike of the veins and along the veins and geophysical and geochemical surveys to assess the overburden covered areas for extensions to the zone. This data will be used to outline a follow-up drill program if warranted.

The location of the Hebert Zone and other gold prospects on the 100 kilometre long Baffin property, including the Malrok, Ridge Lake, Brent and Durette gold zones, can be found on the Company's website and in the Company's news releases pertaining to the Baffin gold project. The property is readily accessible to tidewater, contains abundant fresh water and is located near two "Distant Early Warning" (DEW line) radar stations, each with an operational 4,000 foot airstrip.

GeoVector Management Inc. of Ottawa managed the field program this year. Alan Sexton, MSc, P.Geol. is the Project Manager and the Qualified Person under NI 43-101 supervised the technical aspects of the 2008 field program and is responsible for the contents of this news release.

Analytical Procedures

All samples were transported to TSL Laboratories in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for analysis.

Channel samples not containing quartz veins and all grab samples were prepared and assayed by regular assay methods for gold. Samples were crushed to minimum 70% passing 10 mesh. A 250 gram sub-sample was taken for pulverizing and the remaining reject material was returned to a labeled bag and stored. The 250 gram sub-sample was pulverized to a minimum 95% passing 150 mesh. The homogenized sample was analyzed by FA/AA using a 1 AT charge with a detection limit of 0.03 g/t gold. Any samples that assayed greater than 1 g/t Au were re-analyzed by FA/Gravimetric using a 1 AT charge with a detection limit of 0.03 g/t gold.

Channel samples containing quartz veins and semi-massive arsenopyrite were prepared and assayed by metallics assay methods for gold. The channel samples were crushed using a primary jaw crusher to minimum 70% passing 10 mesh. The entire sample was then pulverized to a minimum 95% passing 150 mesh. A silica wash was done after each sample. A single 1 AT charge was analyzed by FA/Gravimetric with a detection limit of 0.03 g/t gold on the +150 mesh material. Two 1 AT charges were analyzed by FA/Gravimetric with a detection limit of 0.03 g/t gold on the -150 mesh material.

TSL Laboratories inserts certified gold standards, which are purchased from CDN Resource Labs and inserted on a routine basis. Results from all internal QC samples and repeats were reported. In addition, Commander sequentially inserts certified gold standards, which are purchased from CANMET, and "blank" rock samples. One standard and one blank were inserted with every batch of 20 samples prior to shipment to TSL Laboratories. All certified standards inserted by Commander returned gold values within the accepted limits of the standard. All blanks inserted by Commander returned non-detected to negligible gold values.

The chain of security for the samples collected were:
  • Collected and removed from the field area to camp each day
  • Placed in double rice bags with plastic security ties
  • Loaded onto charter aircraft by GeoVector personnel at Dewar Lakes and flown directly to Iqaluit
  • Unloaded in Iqaluit by Commander's expeditor and placed in secure area of aircraft cargo hanger
  • Flown to Saskatoon and picked up at the airport by TSL Laboratories personnel.
