Dominion Diamond to appoint former De Beers executive as new chairperson
TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Canadian miner Dominion Diamond Corp plans to appoint former De Beers Canada chief executive Jim Gowans as its new nonexecutive chairperson to replace Robert Gannicott, who alluded to “medical challenges” in a statement on Wednesday.
Gowans was appointed to the board, which intended to install him as chairperson by April 30.
Dominion also announced that it had appointed Josef Vejvoda to the board, after a group of activist shareholders who own 5.4% of Dominion and are led by K2 & Associates Investment Management, in December expressed their discontent with the company’s shareholder returns. Dominion conceded that a group of shareholders identified Vejvoda and proposed him to Dominion.
“These appointments fill the two casual vacancies on the board and the experience and expertise of these two individuals will make a very positive contribution to the governance of the company. In addition to these appointments, the board will continue its existing search process to identify an additional independent director who can join the board,” stated lead independent director of the board Daniel Jarvis.
Gowans was CEO of De Beers Canada from 2006 to 2010 and MD of the Debswana Diamond Company, in Botswana, from 2011 to 2014. Gowans is currently president, CEO and director of Arizona Mining, a Canadian minerals exploration company. Before joining Arizona, he was co-president of Barrick Gold from 2014 to 2015.
