April Stock Starts for Power Utilities and Coal Producers (Part 1 of 3) Utilities ETF gains 1.5%
After dropping 2.4% the previous week, the Select Sector Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLU) gained 1.5% during the week ending April 2, 2015. Yields across maturities dropped during the week due to the geopolitical scenario and weak economic indicators.
During the same period, the broad-based SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) gained 0.3%. SPY is a key ETF tracking the S&P 500 benchmark index. The iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) also tracks the S&P 500.
Dynegy
The majority of power utilities that we cover—36 out of 41—emerged as winners during the week. Dynegy (DYN) won biggest with a 10.6% gain. The stock closed at $31.29 on April 2.
The company acquired Duke Energy’s (DUK) Midwest commercial and retail assets. It also acquired Energy Capital Partners’ stake in EquiPower Resources and Brayton Point Holdings. Both operate in the Northeast. The acquisitions will help the Houston, Texas–based company expand its presence geographically.
Other gains
Albuquerque, New Mexico–based PNM Resources (PNM) was another notable performer with a 4.7% gain. The stock closed at $29.37 on April 2 with a market capitalization of $2.3 billion.
Houston, Texas–based Calpine (CPN) recorded a 4.4% gain to end the week at $22.75 with a market capitalization of $8.5 billion.
Kansas City, Missouri–based Great Plains Energy recorded a 3.1% gain to end the week at $26.95 with a market capitalization of $4.2 billion.
