NaiKun Wind Environmental Assessment Proceeds to Next Stage
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - July 14, 2009) - NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc. (TSX VENTURE:NKW) announced today the completion of the 45-day public comment phase for the review of its application for an Environmental Assessment Certificate. The NaiKun Wind project is planned for Hecate Strait, an area off the northwest coast of British Columbia, where 110 wind turbines will generate clean, renewable energy. Power from the project will be used by BC Hydro to help meet the province's growing energy needs, generating enough electricity for 130,000 homes. NaiKun Wind's application was recently received by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office and the 180-day application review phase began on May 20, 2009. The 45-day period for public input began on May 28 and ended at midnight on July 12. Open houses held in Prince Rupert, Queen Charlotte City and Masset were well attended and constructive feedback regarding the project has been submitted to the provincial Environmental Assessment Office. "We would like to thank all those who contributed during the public comment phase by attending open houses and providing input to the Environmental Assessment Office," said Matt Burns, Vice President, NaiKun Wind. "We value the input that we continue to receive. It ensures that the project's final design reflects the interests of local communities." NaiKun Wind will respond to all comments and prepare a summary report of the consultation results by August 3, 2009. The responses and the report will be posted to the Environmental Assessment Office website. A concurrent review of the project by the Haida Nation is underway to evaluate the potential effects of the project relating to the environment, traditional use and culture of the Haida people and lands. NaiKun Wind anticipates completion of both processes by the end of 2009. NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc. is a British Columbia-based renewable energy company. The first phase of its offshore wind energy project will generate enough electricity to power 130,000 B.C. homes, help the province reach its goal of becoming electricity self-sufficient by 2016, and play a significant role in combating climate change. The project will also create an estimated 200 direct jobs during construction and 50 permanent jobs for maintenance and operations.
