WALTHAM, MASS. - National Grid is preparing an 11-acre site on Riverside Avenue in Somerset, MA for a new substation. In June 2015, National Grid announced plans to replace the existing Somerset Substation, which dates back to the 1920s, with a new 115 kilovolt (kV) state-of-the-art substation. National Grid has hired Charter Contracting Company, a civil construction firm based in Boston, to perform site work that includes removing a large, above-ground storage tank on the site.
Removing the tank is the first step in preparing the land for construction of the substation. Tank removal will take approximately six months with actual construction set to begin in 2017 and the new substation operating in 2018.
'The new high-tech substation will meet the growing transmission needs of the Somerset region and will support the area's future infrastructure improvements,' said Marcy Reed, president of National Grid in Massachusetts. 'We're committed to working with Somerset officials, residents and businesses to ensure they have the most up-to-date information and can easily contact us about this infrastructure project.'
The $45 million project is part of the company's Connect21 vision to modernize infrastructure.
