Gold Ridge Mining Limited has placed the following notice in Solomon Islands newspapers today:
Gold Ridge Community Alert - Tailings Storage Facility
Gold Ridge Mining Limited (GRML) advises that the Gold Ridge tailings storage facility could overflow during the current wet season and this could affect local communities.
The water in the facility is already too high for this time of year.
GRML wants to lower the water level to prevent the facility from overflowing in an uncontrolled and unpredictable way but the Government has not yet given GRML approval to do this, despite GRML's engagement with the Government over a number of months and repeated requests for approval.
The water treatment plant was destroyed by vandals for the second time in August so the only way to lower the water level in time to stop an overflow is to discharge untreated water.
Recent independent tests show that the water GRML intends to discharge meets international aquaculture safety guidelines and is safe to release into the Tinahulu River without treatment.
Although it is not possible to predict when the storage facility will overflow and what the impact would be, we have provided a map below to show some of the possible affected areas for your information.
To make sure you are well prepared in case the tailings storage facility does overflow, we encourage you to seek further information from the police or your local community leader.
