Players Championship
BALTIMORE, Jan 22, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) today announced that the Constellation Energy Golf Foundation has distributed $400,000 to four Maryland-based charitable organizations resulting from the 2008 Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship. Those organizations receiving funds include The First Tee of Baltimore, Kennedy Krieger Institute, Union Memorial Hospital and the Baltimore Community Foundation/BGE Community Assistance Fund.
"We're pleased that, as a result of last year's Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, four Maryland charities have each received $100,000 to help continue the important work they do in our community," said Mayo A. Shattuck III, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Constellation Energy and chairman of the Constellation Energy Golf Foundation. "The Champions Tour's focus on supporting local communities aligns with Constellation Energy's foundational value of corporate social responsibility. We demonstrate our commitment to communities where we do business - and in particular in our home state of Maryland - through activities like our sponsorship of the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, through our support of the United Way, through our employees' countless volunteer efforts and through our support of organizations that seek to improve educational resources, drive economic growth, provide energy assistance and protect and preserve the environment."
"Giving back to the communities we serve is a key component of the Champions Tour's charitable platform," said Mike Stevens, president of the Champions Tour. "We're grateful to Constellation Energy and their foundation for their generous support of these worthwhile organizations and our players applaud these noble initiatives."
In addition, the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship earned the Champions Tour's 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award. The Champions Tour presents the award annually to the tournament that is deemed to have staged and executed the event to the highest possible level. Specifically in 2008, it was noted that the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship distinguished itself as the first Champions Tour event to be carbon neutral. To make the 2008 tournament a carbon-neutral event, the greenhouse gas footprint associated with the tournament was calculated and reduced through on-site actions and offset via the purchase of certified hydrogen carbon credits and Renewable Energy Certificates.
The Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship is one of five major championships on the PGA TOUR's Champions Tour for eligible professionals age 50 and over. The Championship is contested on the East Course at Baltimore Country Club in Timonium, Md., with a field of 78 Champions Tour players competing for a share of the $2.7 million purse, the largest of the season. The 2009 event is scheduled for Sept. 28 to Oct. 4. As the last of the Champions Tour majors, the double Charles Schwab Cup points awarded to the top 10 finishers are a critical factor in deciding the Charles Schwab Cup points race.
