U.S. stocks closed higher on Monday as investors tried to look beyond the uncertain timing of a possible interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve.
Drugmakers slumped on concern of new regulations to control pricing following comments from Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 125.61 points, or 0.8 percent, to 16,510.19.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 8.94 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,966.97.
The Nasdaq composite gained 1.73 points, or less than 0.1 percent, to 4,828.95.
For the year:
The Dow is down 1,312.88 points, or 7.4 percent.
The S&P 500 index is down 91.93 points, or 4.5 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 92.90 points, or 2 percent.
