(INDIANAPOLIS) - For his strong management vision and commitment to
community, Niel Ellerbrook, chairman, president and CEO of Evansville-based
Vectren Corporation, has been named the Indiana Chamber of Commerce's 2007
Business Leader of the Year. Ellerbrook received the honor tonight at the
Chamber's 18th Annual Awards Dinner before a crowd of more than 1,200
business, civic and political leaders at the Indiana Convention Center in
Indianapolis.
Ellerbrook assumed his
current post in 2000 when Vectren was created through the merger of
Indianapolis's Indiana Energy and Evansville-based SIGCORP. Today,
Ellerbrook says the energy company is "at least where I might have
envisioned it would be. If anything, it is probably larger in size than
when the merger was contemplated. We've been able to devote more human
capital and financial capital than we ever could have hoped to devote to
the industry's challenges."
Determined to make the
merger a success and put minds at ease that the company was staying in
Evansville, Ellerbrook immediately placed community participation high on
his to-do list - where it has remained.
He became involved in a
highly successful capital campaign for a new Ivy Tech campus, and in 2008
he will become chair of the University of Evansville board of trustees. He
is also active on the board of Signature Learning Center, a charter school
that serves as a model for education, and is proud of Vectren's status as
the leading United Way participant in Evansville.
"Niel brings such
valuable financial knowledge and leadership skills to the table and has
achieved tremendous success at all points of his career. He expertly guided
the process following the Vectren merger and has become a strong, visible
community leader for not only Evansville but all of Southwest
Indiana," commends Indiana Chamber President Kevin Brinegar.
Reflecting on the award, Ellerbrook modestly says: "It's clearly a
team award. I'm not being given this because of me the individual. It's
based on being with a great Indiana company in a great community."
Also honored at the Chamber's Annual Dinner were Government Leader of
the Year Graham Richard, mayor of Fort Wayne, and Anderson as Community of
the Year.
The dinner followed the Chamber's Fall Board of Directors and Annual
Membership meetings. Recognized during a luncheon ceremony as Volunteers of
the Year for their work with the Chamber were Tom Hirons of
Bloomington/Indianapolis and Gale Given and Steve Walker, both of
Indianapolis.
Andre B. Lacy, chairman of LDI, Ltd. in Indianapolis, was elected the
Chamber's 2008 chair of the board of directors.
