Shareholders and friends,
We sat down with our very own resident vanadium expert, Les Ford, and asked him to tell you what gets him excited about the project:
Les, how long have you been in the vanadium industry and how many vanadium operations have you built, refurbished or provided your technical expertise to?
Les Ford: Started at Higveld Steel and Vanadium in 1970. Redesigned the then Vantra (now Vanchem), changed the chemistry from Chloride to sulphate process. Designed Vantech the lowest cost producer until ore ran out and plant closed. Redesigned Rhovan, turned it into the present lowest cost producer. Involved in the basic chemistry design of Windimurra 1. Have done due diligence on 4 vanadium operations for various clients.
How does the Maracas Vanadium Project compare?
Les Ford: Maracas has by far the highest grade ore deposit, and even more important the highest grade concentrate compared with any present or proposed V operation.
Do you see further potential to increase the economics at the project going forward – what are the biggest potential drivers of this?
Les Ford: Recoveries and production volume will be the main drivers, the high concentrate grade and low SiO2 is likely to give better recoveries than we budgeted for.
The project is under construction presently and is making good progress - what is getting you really excited about the project at its current stage? And likewise, what do you lose sleep over?
Les Ford: The excitement and the challenge is to transfer my V knowledge to our people to ensure we ramp up fast and efficiently. We have a strong team on the ground and I am confident we are accomplishing this. I have never worked with such a high grade concentrate, this can only be a positive factor and to experience the benefit in operation and cost of this is to me exciting. Also, think for any engineer, it is quite exciting to design and build a plant form scratch!
Perhaps you can provide shareholders with your perspective of the vanadium market and where you think it is going – do you see any exciting developments in the near term?
Les Ford: There are several new applications for the use of vanadium products such as batteries etc, these will have some affect on demand but V consumption will stay linked to steel. All the countries which are expanding and planning increased steel production, such as China, Russia, India, Brazil, all have a low current usage of Vper total ton of steel produced. Movement towards the use of higher grade steel in these countries will fuel increased V demand.
Is there anything else you would like to say to our shareholders about the project?
Les Ford: Just that, in my opinion, this will be the best vanadium facility in the world by a substantial margin. I happen to have a lot of experience in vanadium, but I think anyone with experience operating a mining facility can agree that, no matter what the commodity, being the best and lowest cost project is a great position to be in. I’m definitely excited to be a part of this.
Les Ford will also walk you through the process flow diagram for Maracas in our latest video “Maracas Vanadium Process Flow with Les Ford, Resident Vanadium Expert”
