Kinross Gold is attracting upside option activity ahead of its earnings report early next month.
More than 2,000 December 2.50 calls were purchased for $0.18 this morning, according to optionMONSTER's Heat Seeker tracking program. This is clearly positioning, as open interest in the strike was just 101 contracts before the session began.
Long calls lock in the price where investors can buy a stock, letting them position for a rally at limited cost with the potential for significant leverage. They carry less risk than owning shares because the most that can be lost is the price of the options no matter how far the stock might fall. (See our Education section)
KGC is up a penny to $2.34 in early trade. The Toronto-based miner has been working higher since falling to $1.35 on Sept. 11, its lowest price since April 2001. The company is scheduled to announce quarterly results on Nov. 10.
Total option volume in the name is below its full-session average, but calls are outnumbering puts by 116 to 1 so far.
