Today Microsoft has announced the Generally Availability of Azure HDInsight, with Apache Hadoop 2.6, available on Ubuntu Linux clusters. Azure HDInsight is a Hadoop managed service in the cloud and uses the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP).
This release is a direct result of the commitment that Microsoft has to Open Source. Microsoft has worked along with Hortonworks® in the community to contribute towards Apache Hadoop and related projects, including Apache Ambari.
HDInsight on Linux, built with the core HDP platform utilizes Apache Ambari to provide seamless and comprehensive deployment, management and monitoring of Apache Hadoop platform components in Azure.
Enabling the ecosystem
There is a large and growing ecosystem of applications provided by ISVs that are certified for the Linux Hadoop environment. These ISV offering expand the Hadoop platform by providing key functionality such as Security and Governance, Data Preparation Data Visualization functions.
Users of Azure HDinsight can now leverage this growing ecosystem of applications directly on Azure HDInsight on Linux. Supporting this large ecosystem enables Enterprises to run their end to end analytical processing in Azure, and will drive more workloads to the Azure cloud.
Enabling the hybrid cloud
There are many enterprises that have started their journey with Hadoop on premise on Linux commodity servers. With Azure HDinsight on Linux, these enterprises can now expand their analytics footprint into Azure seamlessly by moving the same applications and ISV software that they run on premise to Azure HDinsight. Hadoop Operators can now leverage the same toolsets - Apache Ambari and SSH based remote access - to manage and monitor Hadoop in Azure.
Microsoft's deep commitment to open source enables a greater choice for Azure users, supports a growing ecosystem and encourages the use of familiar toolsets.
