Constellation Energy Names Claire E. Buchan Vice President, Public Strategy
BALTIMORE, Aug 07, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG) today announced the appointment of Claire E. Buchan as vice president for public strategy. In this newly created cross-functional role, Buchan will manage the development and execution of a coordinated public strategy for Constellation Energy, working closely with the government affairs, policy and corporate communications teams. She reports to James Connaughton, executive vice president, corporate affairs, public and environmental policy.
"Claire has an outstanding record and reputation in both the public and private sectors as a seasoned strategist, manager and communicator. Her experience will be valuable to Constellation Energy as we advance our business strategy, which includes new nuclear, renewable energy and energy efficiency," said Connaughton.
From 2005 to January 2009, Buchan was chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Commerce, where she was the principal strategic advisor to the Commerce Secretary and oversaw public affairs, policy and strategic planning, business liaison, White House liaison, scheduling and advance, and the Office of the Executive Secretariat. From 2001 to 2005, she served at the White House as deputy assistant to the President and deputy White House press secretary. From 1993 to 2001, she was vice president for communications at The ServiceMaster Company, a multi-billion Fortune 500 company, which includes the brand names Terminix, TruGreen-ChemLawn and Merry Maids.
Previously, Buchan served in President George H.W. Bush's administration as deputy assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of the Treasury, press secretary to the U.S. Trade Representative and deputy communications director at the Republican National Committee.
During the Reagan Administration, Buchan worked in the Commerce Department's International Trade Administration. Before joining the Reagan administration, she was press secretary to New Jersey Congressman H. James Saxton.
Buchan received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration, with a major in marketing, from Michigan State University.
