Gold miner Newcrest is cutting jobs and closing its Brisbane office in response to falling gold prices.
‘‘Corporate office and support functions will be further rationalised, resulting in a reduction of at least 20 per cent in corporate costs and the closure of the Brisbane office,’’ the company said this morning.
A PWSC spokesman said the company was close to striking a deal with the union.
‘‘We’re not far off an agreement ... but there is still a little way to go,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s disappointing, but we’ll continue on.’’
He said the company had always had a good relationship with the unions.
