Sussex, New Brunswick - Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PotashCorp) is helping the CBC Saint John Harbour Lights campaign for local food banks shine bright with the $50,000 matching gift it presented Friday to campaign organizers.
Each year, Port Saint John raises a huge Christmas tree, made of thousands of lights, near the Saint John harbour. With each $2 donation to the Harbour Lights campaign, a bulb is lit on the tree. As December progresses, the tree lights up bulb by bulb, until the star at the top of the tree is lit when the campaign reaches its goal.
For the second year in a row, PotashCorp pledged to match all contributions to the campaign dollar for dollar - up to $50,000. Funds raised support 13 New Brunswick food banks located in communities from Sussex to St. Stephen.
'PotashCorp is very happy to partner with the CBC Harbour Lights campaign because we know it helps enhance food security for people in need in our neighboring communities,' said Iain Guille, General Manager of PotashCorp's New Brunswick potash operation. 'Improving peoples' access to healthy food is a natural fit for us, as we are in the business of helping farmers produce more food for the world's growing population.'
On Friday, Guille presented PotashCorp's $50,000 matching gift to the campaign during CBC Information Morning's live broadcast from the Saint John City Market.
Since 1997 CBC Saint John and Port Saint John have raised more than $2 million - from individuals, companies and associations - to improve regional food security.
As the world's largest crop nutrient company, PotashCorp plays an integral role in global food production. The company produces the three essential nutrients required to help farmers grow healthier, more abundant crops. With global populations rising and diets improving in developing countries, crop nutrients such as potash, nitrogen and phosphate offer a responsible and practical solution to help produce the food we need, from the land we have. In operation since 1983, the New Brunswick facility is one of our six potash mines in Canada.
