PPL Corporation PPL reported first-quarter 2015 adjusted earnings of 77 cents per share, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 68 cents by 13.2%. Quarterly earnings also increased 16.7% year over year due to strong contribution from U.K. regulated segment and improved results at the Pennsylvania Regulated and Kentucky Regulated segments.
On a GAAP basis, the company’s earnings per share were 96 cents compared with 49 cents a year ago. The variance between GAAP and adjusted earnings was due to certain special items at U.K. Regulated, Corporate and Other and Supply segments. In the first quarter, PPL Corp.’s total revenue of $3,165 million exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate by around 11.4%. On a year-over-year basis, the top line surged 165.1%.
Operational Highlights
In the quarter under review, PPL Corp.’s total operating expenses increased a whopping 345.4% year over year to $2,098 million, mainly due to energy purchase expense of $321 million this quarter as against a savings of $1,494 million in the first quarter of 2014. The last year savings resulted from realized and unrealized gains on physical and financial commodity purchase contracts.
The company reported operating income of $1,067 million compared with $723 million a year ago.
Interest expenses in the first quarter stood at $247 million slightly lower than $262 million a year ago.
Business Update
In 2014, PPL Corporation announced that it will spin-off its competitive energy business to create an independent entity, Talen Energy Corporation, in collaboration with an energy and power investment firm Riverstone Holdings LLC. PPL Corp. expects to complete the transaction on Jun 1, 2015.
Financial Update
As of Mar 31, 2015, PPL Corp. had cash and cash equivalents of $1.34 billion compared with $1.75 billion as of Dec 31, 2014.
Long-term debt as of Mar 31, 2015 was $18.77 billion compared with $18.86 billion at the end of 2014.
Net cash from operating activities in the first quarter was $673 million compared with $931 million in the prior-year period.
Guidance
PPL Corp. reaffirmed its 2015 earnings guidance from its regulated utility operations in the U.S. and the UK in the range of $2.05–$2.25 per share, excluding the Supply segment.

Xcel Energy Inc. XEL recorded operating earnings of 46 cents per share in the first quarter of 2015, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 50 cents by 8%.
NextEra Energy, Inc. NEE announced first-quarter 2015 adjusted earnings of $1.41 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.28 by 10.2%.
Duke Energy Corporation DUK reported first-quarter 2015 adjusted earnings of $1.24 per share that outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.12 by 10.7%.
