Ready to temp? Temporary job opportunities increasing

  • 21% of organisations will increase their use of temporary and contract staff over the next 12 months;
  • With just 12% expected to decrease their use of such staff, significantly more temporary and contract roles will be on offer;
  • 23% of organisations now use temporary and contract staff on a regular ongoing basis.

The number of temporary and contract jobs will continue to rise in the year ahead, according to recruiting experts Hays.

Based on findings in the 2016 Hays Salary Guide, 21% of employers expect to increase their use of temporary and contract staff over the next 12 months, which more than exceeds the 12% who plan to decrease their use of such staff.

The greatest increases in temporary and contract job numbers will be inengineeringdepartments (where 31% of employers plan to increase their use of such staff), followed by IT(29%), project management(25%), operational managementand purchasing/procurement(both 23%), distribution(22%) andHRand sales(both 20%).

Meanwhile 15% of accountancy & financeand 10% of marketingdepartments will increase their use of temporaries and contractors.

The Hays Salary Guid e also shows that while 31% of employers never or rarely use temporaries and contractors, 46% use them for special projects or workloads, and the final 23% use them on a regular ongoing basis.

'In recent years temporaries and contractors have been used primarily to offer headcount flexibility,' says Nick Deligiannis, Managing Director of Hays in Australia & New Zealand. 'But today they are sought to be part of and support an existing team, work on projects and to add particular expertise to a department.

'Given the shortage of highly-skilled professionals and rising business activity, temporaries and contractors will certainly see a greater need for their skills in the year ahead.

'For candidates considering a temporary or contract role, you need to be an expert in your field with the ability to hit the ground running. In return you receive exposure to a wide range of industries and organisations, expand your network, gain skills in new systems, and deepen your expertise,' he said.

The Hays Salary Guide includes salary and recruiting trends for over 1,000 roles and is based on a survey of 2,752 organisations, representing over 2.6 million (2,686,179) employees in Australia and New Zealand.
