Stocks rallied from session lows on on Wednesday, following minutes from the Federal Reserve's July meeting.
Near 2:24 p.m. ET, the Dow was down 29 points, the S&P 500 was down 3 points, and the Nasdaq was down 2 points. The Dow lost more than 200 points earlier.
Headlines from the minutes appeared on the Bloomberg terminal ahead of the official release time of 2:00 p.m. ET, in what appeared to be a leak. The full text was posted shortly after on the Fed's website.
According to the minutes, "most Fed officials in July saw conditions for [a] rate rise nearing." We have all the details of the minutes here.
After the release, bond yields slid, with the benchmark 10-year note dropping to as low as 2.14%.
Inflation rose less than expected in July. The consumer price index came in this morning at 0.1% month-over-month (0.2% expected), and 0.1% excluding food and energy costs.
Gold gained more than 1%, and traded near $1,131.30, a one-month high.
Crude oil inventories data showed a build by 2.6 million barrels last week. West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures slipped to a new six-year low, below $42 per barrel in New York.
Chinese stocks bounced back after an early sell off. The benchmark Shanghai Composite gained more than 1% today, following a 6.15% decline on Tuesday. Deutsche Bank's Jim Reid wrote in a client note that investors were concerned that state intervention in the market may be less frequent that before.
