Integrated solar power company SunPower Corporation SPWR announced that it has started constructing the 102-megawatt (AC) Henrietta Solar Project in Kings County, CA. SunPower expects to bring the project online by the end of next year.
The company will be constructing a SunPower Oasis Power Plant system at the approximately 670-acre Henrietta site. SunPower Oasis is a fully integrated solution built with cost-optimized power blocks seamlessly integrated into a turnkey energy solution. The advanced technology used in the system includes robotic solar panel cleaning capability that uses 75% less water than traditional cleaning methods and can help improve system performance by up to 15%.
The robotic cleaning of the solar panels with minimal water enhances performance at minimum costs. The Oasis Power Plant technology is ideal for deploying utility-scale solar projects. The company has used Oasis for the 579 MW Solar Star Projects, 250 MW California Valley Solar Ranch and 72 MW Montalto Power Plant in Italy.
The electricity produced from the 102 MW Henrietta Solar Project will be sold to Pacific Gas and Electric – a unit of PG& E Corporation PCG – under a long-term power purchase agreement. Per the estimates provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the plant when operational will lower carbon dioxide emissions by 128,000 tons annually.
The state of California has been at the forefront of promoting solar power to curb pollution. The authorities have been providing incentives and rebates to promote the installation of utility-scale solar power plants in the state. California’s renewable portfolio standards require electricity providers to obtain 33% of the power they supply to customers to come from eligible renewable sources by 2020.
Per a report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, California is going to be the first state in the country to have more than 5% of its annual utility-scale electricity generation from solar power projects.
So we see a number of solar power and utility companies jointly developing projects in California. First Solar Inc. FSLR has developed the 500 MW Topaz Solar Farm in San Luis Obispo County, CA. Utility provider NRG Energy NRG has invested in the 377 MW Ivanpah Solar project in California’s Mojave Desert.
