PRESS RELEASE
12th December 2014
The EDF Group joins Eletronorte and CHESF in Brazil for the construction of the SINOP hydroelectric dam
Rio, 12th December 2014 - EDF, through its affiliate EDF Norte Fluminense, takes a 51% participation in SINOP Energy Company (CES), in charge of constructing and operating the 400MW SINOP hydroelectric dam. This site will be based upstream of several hydroelectric structures on the Teles Pires river, in Northern Mato Grosso, Brazil (close to the city of Sinop). The two other stakeholders are EletroNorte (24.5%) and CHESF (24.5%), both holdings of Eletrobras.
With this agreement, approved by all companies' governance authorities, by the Brazilian energy regulator (ANEEL) and by the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), EDF Norte Fluminense has taken over the stakes initially owned by the Brazilian electricity player ALUPAR within CES.
The dam construction has started in March 2014 and its commercial commissioning is planned for the second half of 2017. The environmental and social studies and associated management plans have been approved by the Brazilian administration in March 2014. Most significant programmes aim at compensating the residents of the zone impacted by the construction, at ensuring the preservation of fauna and flora affected by the project, and removing part of the vegetation prior to the filling of the reservoir in 2017. Neither native populations nor protected areas are impacted by the project.
With a 51% participation within the consortium, EDF will have an industrial role both in the construction and the operations of the future dam. SINOP meets the Group's social and environmental requirements and the project will enhance EDF's know-how and expertise in both the hydroelectric field and innovation. Hydroelectricity, as a renewable and low carbon energy complementary to intermittent energies, is a crucial element to fight against climate change.
