Fire River Gold Moves To Reignite Gold Production at Nixon Fork"You find a mine where there's been a mine." Ralph Rooney 1990
On a recent trip to Alaska to see Fire River Gold's (FAU: TSXV) Nixon Fork property I asked our bush pilot, a former American Airlines pilot, why he came to Alaska from Texas. His response, "Because you can't chase bears in a Boeing 757."Having spent time in the Yukon writing about the prolific Tintina Gold Belt,I decided it would make sense to see the "other" side of the Tintina Belt in Alaska. I now understand the pilot's sentiments.
(ANCHORAGE, ALASKA) - Since it was first discovered by Alaskan placer miners back in 1917, a number of mining companies have found it difficult to get their heads around the complex geology that is a major feature of the high grade Nixon Fork gold mine. After investing US$54 million in the remote site, which is located about 550 kilometres northwest of Anchorage, St. Andrew Goldfields Ltd. (TSX: T.SAS, Stock Forum) suspended production in October 2007 when the mill head grade dropped to 17.1 grams per tonne from 42 grams.Peter Kennedy is a Stockhouse reporter and web content editor
If the silence up at the Nixon Fork gold mine in Southern Alaska seems slightly eerie, then at least there's nothing sinister about it. It's not the calm before the storm, even if the Alaskan winters do come early, and the clouds are already rolling in grey and low as August draws to a close. It's not even a lurking sense of menace at the hidden, but well-attested presence of bears in the woods nearby. No, the silence, and its associated eeriness derive from two distinctly separate, but benign factors. One: despite Nixon Fork's setting at the centre of hundreds of square kilometres of mountainous and wooded Alaskan wilderness, there are no birds in the trees.
