High Score for Century
- Queensland Mines Rescue Challenge
26 June 2008
Zinifex Century Mine is proud to announce that their Emergency Response
Team placed second in the Queensland Resources Council's Queensland Mines
Rescue Challenge, held at Dairy Farmers Stadium in Townsville last weekend.
The Queensland Mines Rescue Challenge is an annual competition that
attracts mine rescue teams from mining and quarrying companies across
Queensland. Teams are presented with realistic emergency scenarios that
could happen at or around a mine site. They are judged on their
proficiency at dealing with these situations.
The Zinifex Century Mine team placed well in the events at last
weekend's challenge, winning the Multi Casualty/ Vertical Rescue
event (combination team with Crinan Mine) and placing second in Fire
and Hazardous Chemicals, Road Accident, Confined Space and Fitness.
All entrants participated in unscored vehicle stabilisation and rope rescue
technical skills workshops.
Six members of the team from Lihir Gold in Papua New Guinea (the
exotically named Fish, Jelly, Eagle, Dragon, Lionheart and Alligator)
teamed up with three Zinifex Century Mine contestants and three from Ernest
Henry Mine to form an international team for the rope rescue event.
After some last minute pidgin translation lessons, the international
team quickly created professional rapport and placed third. The Lihir
Gold team was also awarded the Esprit de Corps Award at the presentation
dinner last night, and treated their fellow contestants to a glorious
rendition of the PNG national anthem.
Crinum was in the top 3 for all these disciplines and also picked up
Best Medic, Best Captain, and Best Technical...worthy 2008 Champions.
Safety, Health and Environment Manager, John Milsom, said, "Century
has consistently performed well at the Queensland Mines Rescue Challenge,
placing first (2006 and 2006), third (2007) and now second. We have a
policy of training a wide range of employees in mine rescue skills.
This was reflected in the makeup of our Mine Rescue Competition team this
year, and was praised by organisers.
"The team was captained by Jeff Barber, who is an operator here in
the pit. Team members were Aaron Schmid, an operator; Quinton
Nicholl,
a welder; Dion Burgers, a rigger; Chris Agnew, a metallurgist; Anthony
Crawford, a dispatch operator and Kevin Grundy, a fitter. They
were trained and managed by Jeremy Grace, a Site Emergency Technician.
"The management team at Century ensures that a diverse range of
staff is available for rescue training. As a remote operation, this
serves our people best. We're very proud of them and their commitment
to safety."
