Karara Launches Innovative Port Training Program at
Karara Export Terminal
Nationally recognised accreditation in ship-loading, mooring and bulk handling processes
The Mid West's largest resource project, the $3 billion Karara Project, has further expanded its commitment to bring world-class training programs and new skills to the region, unveiling an innovative new training program in partnership with the Durack Institute of Technology based at its world-class Karara Export Terminal at Geraldton.
The program, which will be rolled out at the newly commissioned Karara Export Terminal at Geraldton, will provide over 30 port employees with nationally recognised accreditation in the mining industry, a Mining Certificate III in Resources Processing.
The specially tailored program will have a specific focus on ship-loading, mooring and associated bulk or handling processes conducted at the state-of-the-art port facilities.
The Karara Export Terminal is a 16Mtpa facility which was officially opened by WA's Transport Minister, the Hon Troy Buswell, in September last year. It caters exclusively for Karara's exports, which are railed to port from the Karara mine site, located some 225km inland.
The state-of-the-art port facilities - which comprise a dedicated railway line and twin-car rotary dumper, a 297m storage facility with a capacity of 255,000 metric tonnes, a dedicated berth which can accommodate Panamax vessels (50-80,000 tonnes) and a 5,000 tonne per hour ship-loader with state-of-the-art technology - provide an opportunity for trainees to work with world-leading equipment and technology.
The program will be provided in partnership with the Durack Institute of Technology, a major provider of vocational education and training in the Central West Region of WA.
Working closely with the Durack Institute, KML has been able to add value to its existing internal training by aligning all of its onsite Geraldton Port training and inductions with nationally recognised competencies. This type of training ensures employees are better qualified and more employable for future careers.
The Durack Institute training program in partnership with KML is able to ensure the highest quality of safety as well as maintain work ethics to the highest level with minimal disruption to the core business. Upon program completion, participants will gain a nationally recognised qualification.
KML Chief Executive Officer Steve Murdoch said the program would give employees a unique opportunity to secure a long-term future in the mining industry.
"Karara is a 30-year plus project and, as a long-term employer and participant in the Mid West region, we are investing heavily to develop the people and the skills required to secure our future and the future of the region," Mr Murdoch said.
"Through its active involvement in a number of Midwest communities, KML can provide workers with a unique avenue to qualifications in the resource sector - providing a long-term future not just for the Company and Project, but for the broader community as well," he added.
KML plans to extend the program to mine site operations, giving more employees the opportunity of achieving nationally recognised accreditation.
