• 1 operating reactor uses ~0.5 million pounds (Mlb) of uranium annually, but 1 new reactor needs 3x that amount at start up
• 64 reactors are under construction now (China building 24 of them by 2020)
• China needs to plan for 36Mlb to just start up the 24 reactors it's building
• Mine supply feeds only ~144Mlb (80%) of today's 180Mlb annual world demand
• Supply gap is mainly filled by the US-Russia fuel program due to end in Dec. 2013
• US-Russia fuel deal ends in 1 year (removing 24Mlb of uranium from the market) --fuels 1 in 10 American homes, businesses today or 14% of world's total supply
• Japan overhang (potentially 18Mlb from its offline reactors) could be offset by the removal of the US-Russia fuel in the worse case
• Although Japan restarts seem likely with 2 back online, building continuing on a new reactor, investments in offline reactors & joint ventures for uranium exploration
• And utilities securing long-term supplies now for delivery later plus deferral of new production point to tightening supply emerging soon
