Gas holder dismantling project separate to the Generation Park Norwich project and associated planning applications
A disused gas holder site in Norwich could be set for a new lease of life.
National Grid is planning to dismantle the gas holder and associated buildings at Cremorne Lane, so the land can be cleared and made available for redevelopment.
Work to remove the gas holder started on Monday (12 October) and will take place over the course of several months. It is expected that work will be complete by April 2016. Once prepared and ready for dismantling, National Grid will remove the gas holder shell using cutting equipment and carefully lower it to the ground by using plant excavators. The metal gas holder shell will then be taken to a facility for recycling.
The gas holder is being dismantled as it is no longer in use. Planning applications for future development on this site and neighbouring sites are separate to this gas holder dismantling work.
Sam Rendell, Land Regeneration Manager, National Grid, said: 'Cremorne Lane has played an important part in providing gas to Norwich for decades but improvements in the way we store gas mean it is no longer needed. By regenerating this site we hope it can be put to a better use in the future.
'Preserving gas heritage is important to us. We are looking at ways to keep alive the memory of the gasholder and the industrial history it represents. We would love people connected to the gas works to share their memories with us.'
The work is part of National Grid's nationwide programme to regenerate brownfield sites so that they can have a useful future. The site at Cremorne Lane has been a familiar sight and played an important part in providing gas to the city's residents and businesses. As gas can now be stored within the pipeline network itself, the gas holder at Cremorne Lane is no longer needed.
Norwich has a long history of gas since the development of the first gas works at St Stephens in the 1800s followed by the gas towers at Gas Hill. The construction of the gas holder at Cremorne Lane took place in 1958.
National Grid is looking at ways that the history of the site can be celebrated and is inviting people that have been connected with the gas works to contact them with their memories or photos.
