School holiday working to limit disruption
National Grid is delivering its latest vital gas mains revamp in Southend-On-Sea to help ensure the local community stay connected to safe and reliable gas supplies.
Work will begin on Saturday 28 March and last two weeks. Engineers will be working at the junction of Hamstel Road and Central Avenue, opposite Hamstel Infant and Nursery School.
Ageing metal gas mains will be replaced with tough, durable new pipes, which should last for many years.
Temporary three-way traffic lights will be installed to enable the work to take place. The pedestrian crossing on Hamstel Road, close to the junction with Central Avenue will also be temporarily switched off for the duration of the work.
National Grid project engineer Steve Edwards, said: "It's our job to ensure homes, businesses and public buildings remain connected to safe and reliable energy supplies and that's exactly what this project will do."
He added: "We're doing all we can to ensure we deliver this work with minimal disruption. This includes working during the school Easter holiday period when roads are generally quieter to reduce congestion.
"Also we're working closely with the school and local businesses to ensure that everyone is aware of what's occurring."
National Grid will not require access to any properties and the gas supply will not be affected.
The work is part of a larger project taking place to replace 25km of gas mains across the borough.
