PROJECT UPDATE
Supporting young athletes and celebrating the commitment to success.
With our commitment to permitting and opening a modern, safe copper-nickel mine in northeastern Minnesota, we understand the dedication that�s needed for success.
To honor hard work and accomplishment, we decided to support another group with lofty goals: Minnesota�s young athletes. As a proud sponsor of the Minnesota State High School League 2013 state tournaments, PolyMet applauds our youth athletes and celebrates the communities that encourage them.
We kicked off our presence at the tournaments with dasher boards at the girls� high school hockey tournament. We then had a booth at the Xcel Energy Center during the boys� hockey tournament held March 6 to 9. The booth was the perfect opportunity to connect two tried-and-true Minnesota traditions � hockey and mining. The expected release of the Supplementary Draft Environmental Impact Statement this summer made the booth a great opportunity to inform people about the project and answer questions. Plus, we officially launched our new website at polymetmining.com.
PolyMet team members showcased the metals we plan to mine and the everyday items in which they are used, such as hockey skates and cell phones. We also invited people to text us for a chance to win an iPad� mini, another high-tech item that uses the metals we will mine. In addition, we aired a commercial in the arena and on the television broadcast. The PolyMet team had a great time visiting with fans. More than 1,100 individual people texted us for the iPad� giveaway, and many people signed up to receive our newsletter. We look forward to more opportunities to tell people about our plans.

LaTisha Gietzen, Vice President of Public, Governmental and Environmental Affairs
LaTisha has been vice president of public, governmental and environmental affairs for PolyMet since 2007. With more than 15 years of experience in environmental planning and government relations, she has been a leader in shaping environmental policy for Minnesota and the mining industry for more than a decade.
LaTisha stays active in many area organizations, including the boards of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, Mining Minnesota, Iron Mining Association and Northspan, as well as the Northeast Minnesota Higher Education District General Program Advisory Council. She holds her master�s degree in management and her bachelor�s degree in civil engineering, with an emphasis on the environment. An Iron Range native, LaTisha lives in Hibbing, just three miles from where she grew up, with her husband Darren and 7-year-old son Logan. |

What is your favorite thing about where you live? |
|
The peace and quiet of the outdoors. Our house is set on 80 acres, which means I can go out my back door and enjoy being outside without seeing or hearing anyone else. |

What do you like to do in your spare time? |
|
Spend time outside with my family, including camping, hiking, snowmobiling, spending time at the cabin, and watching hockey and baseball. We love involving extended family in our adventures, from canoe trips in the BWCA to pheasant hunts in North Dakota to vacations in Florida. |

What is the strangest food you�ve ever eaten? |
|
Tiger meat, which is a raw spiced ground beef eaten on a cracker � a North Dakota thing. |
| What are you looking forward to most about spring/summer? |
|
An extended family trip to Orlando, numerous camping trips and getting a new puppy. |
| What band would you love to see live? |
|
I�d love to see The Rolling Stones for their iconic appeal, but for new bands, Mumford and Sons. |
| What�s your favorite breakfast food? |
|
English muffin breakfast sandwich: egg, ham, cheese and a tiny dollop of Miracle Whip. |

Copper, nickel and precious metals are here, there and everywhere

Found in everything from stainless steel in skate blades to copper wires, the metals from PolyMet�s proposed NorthMet project are essential to our everyday lives. Without them, we wouldn�t have electricity, plumbing, surgical instruments, hybrid cars or many of our household appliances. In fact, you wouldn�t have a computer, phone or iPad to view this newsletter. Below are some of the everyday items made from the metals we�ll mine. |

Going green |
- New Hybrid cars contain about 121 lbs. of copper � double the amount in a new, gasoline-powered car.
- Catalytic converters, which reduce air pollution from cars, each include nearly 1 ounce of platinum and palladium.
- Wind turbines, which each generate enough power to supply 1,500 average homes with electricity, contain about 9,400 pounds of copper (based on a 3MW turbine).

| Health Care |
- Knee surgeries, which help treat the around 100,000 to 200,000 people who annually injure their ACL, require nickel.
- Diabetes test strips, used byabout 8.3 percent of the U.S. population, contain platinum.
- Hip replacements, helping more than 285,000 Americans retain mobility, contain cobalt.
- Stents, inserted into 600,000 Americans� ailing hearts each year, contain cobalt.

| Everyday appliances |
- Cell phones � owned by around 88 percent of Americans � contain 34 milligrams of gold, plus cobalt, copper, palladium and platinum.
- Aircraft engines need more than 110 pounds of cobalt to take you on that vacation to Bermuda.
- Computers today require five times more minerals, including gold, than in 1980..
- Speakers, whether in your car or a concert hall, contain a magnet. And those magnets contain cobalt.
