While 10 automakers decided to make automatic emergency braking a standard feature in their vehicles in the U.S. to increase road safety, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. ( HMC) became the tenth company to be allowed to test drive autonomous vehicles on public roads in California. While the launch of such vehicles will take time, the permission to test drive on public roads brings them one step closer to launch. Meanwhile, plans of electric car launches by Porsche, Audi and Mercedes-Benz by 2018 were made public. With so many luxury carmakers now taking serious interest in the electric vehicle market, Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA) will have to gear up for stiff competition in the coming years. Further, Ford Motor Co. (F) announced its collaboration with Alcoa Inc. to develop next-generation automotive aluminum alloys. Recap of the Week’s Most Important Stories 1. In a bid to significantly reduce rear-end collisions, 10 major automakers agreed to offer automatic emergency braking (“AEB”) systems as a standard feature in all their vehicles in the U.S. Although a schedule for implementation has not been specified, the development should avert or reduce the severity of 80% of rear-end collisions in the U.S., per the National Transportation Safety Board. The automakers that made the commitment are Audi, BMW, Ford, General Motors Company (GM), Mazda Motor Corporation, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, Toyota Motor Corporation ( TM), and others. These automakers accounted for nearly 57% of vehicle sales in the U.S. last year (read more: Automakers to Offer Auto Braking as Standard Feature in U.S. ). 2. Honda has obtained permission to test drive its autonomous vehicles on public roads in California. The Japanese automaker is the tenth company to receive such a permit from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (read more: Honda Allowed to Test Self-Driving Cars on California Roads ). 3. Ford announced a joint development agreement with Alcoa Inc. to make next-generation automotive aluminum alloys for the production of auto parts. The alloys will be developed with the help of Alcoa’s Micromill technology. Ford’s engineers have already approved the aluminum alloy made with the help of the Micromill technology for the production of vehicle parts. The Micromill material will be used in the manufacturing process of the 2016 F-150 from the next quarter. The agreement will facilitate the development of other automotive alloys using the Micromill technology (read more: Ford and Alcoa Team Up for Automotive Alloy Development ). 4. Competition for Tesla is intensifying. Volkswagen’s premium brands Porsche and Audi displayed new battery-powered vehicles at the Frankfurt auto show. Audi displayed the e-tron quattro sport-utility concept which is its first electric model designed for series production. Meanwhile, Porsche showcased its first-ever battery-powered sports car – the Mission E concept. Both these vehicles will be hitting the market in 2018. Even Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz is planning to launch a new electric car , most likely by 2018. These vehicles will compete with Tesla in the luxury electric car market.
