Call goes out for local artists and designers to submit design concepts for concrete panels on the boundary wall of a new substation.
16 Jun 2015
• Local artists invited to submit ideas for boundary wall at new Islington substation
• Winning design will be turned into permanent feature panels on 2.4m high wall
• Design will be applied using innovative new etching technology
A call has gone out to local artists and designers to submit design concepts for concrete panels on the boundary wall of a new substation.
National Grid is building the new electricity substation on Seven Sisters Road which will help ensure Londoners remain connected to safe and reliable energy supplies in future years.
The new development also includes flats and shops along with a 77.5m long 2.4m high boundary wall. Funding will be available for the project and the winning design will be etched onto 21 concrete panels of varying sizes which will be incorporated into the wall.
Project manager Daniel Angel said: "We're looking for proposals which are of high artistic quality, demonstrate a commitment to involving the local community and are financial viable.
"The wall will be a permanent feature, which will be visible to the public and enjoyed by the local community and we look forward to working with the winning artist to create something that will be unique and special."
Designs can vary from text to pictures to patterns but will need to include some element of repetition.
The designs will need to consist of:
-
Eight unique panels to measure 1.5m x 1.5m
-
Eight unique panels to measure 1.5m x 1m
-
Five repeating or patterned panels to measure 1.5m x 1m
The winning design will be applied to the concrete panels using an innovative etching technique which is very new to Britain.
To enter the first stage of the competition all people need to do is write a short written statement explaining who they are and how they would approach the project. This can be accompanied by examples of previous relevant work and some basic concept images.
