Cobalt to share EV battery duties with nickel
In the spring of 2018 Tesla came out with a bold prediction: bringing the amount of cobalt used in their Model 3 battery cells down to zero.  “Cells used in Model 3 are the highest energy density cells used in any electric vehicle. We have achieved this by significantly reducing cobalt content per battery pack while increasing nickel content and still maintaining superior thermal stability,” the company stated in its Q1 2018 update letter. “The cobalt content of our Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum cath

Perspective We have been watching for credit conditions to deteriorate - enough to prompt the establishment to claim that there are no problems. It took a jump in long-dated rates and a hit to the stock markets to prompt some such defensive claims. The advice to ignore the break and focus on the economy seems naïve. In ordinary conditions the top of the stock market leads the peak in the economy by some 12 months. That is why the S&P is included in the formal list of "Leading Indicators" (number

Resurgent US oil industry priming the economic pump
Crude oil prices dropped from $110 a barrel in the summer of 2014 to about $30 in January 2016. The effect on oil producers and oil-producing countries was dramatic. The Russian ruble plunged, and the Canadian dollar slipped to below 70 cents US for the first time since 2003, kicking the country into recession and snuffing out the oil boom in Alberta. Many foreign companies operating in the high-cost Canadian oil sands pulled up stakes. One of the hardest hit countries was Venezuela, whose petr

A New Bull Market In Commodities Is Emerging
We’ve all watched in amazement, while the equities markets around the world have risen to new highs. On Wall Street hardly a week goes by without a new record. There comes a time however when a sector becomes so overbought, that smart money begins to leave and search for a sector that has been overlooked. That moment is now at hand, as can be seen in our first chart – courtesy sources listed. This chart compares equities to commodities. In 1970, 2000 and today, equities have become overpriced

Gold vs. Crypto: A False Dichotomy
[image credit: Getrends.com]Gold vs crypto.  With some exceptions, most people who hold gold and other precious metals just cannot tolerate the idea of something that only exists in the digital realm being just as valuable, if not more valuable, than something physical. Many crypto enthusiasts hate gold.  With some exceptions, those who support cryptocurrency see gold as an outdated shiny pet rock, a “barbarous relic” if you will. All you have to do to get the details on these differences is rea

Will the Electric Car Revolution Sink Platinum and Palladium
Everyone has probably heard about the upcoming electric car revolution whose vanguard is Tesla Motors led by Elon Musk. The electric car is actually nothing new – the first vehicles were produced as long ago as in the 1880s. However, the mass production of cheaper gasoline vehicles triggered by Henry Ford put electric cars into limbo for decades. But this can change quickly thanks to the rapidly falling costs. As one can see in the chart below, the price of a battery pack declined from $1000 per
