Commander Samples Up To 442 G/T Gold From New Baffin Prospects

Commander Resources Ltd. (CMD-TSX Venture) reports that high-grade gold assays have been received in the first batch of surface channel and chip samples returned from several new gold showings discovered in the Hbert Prospect Area, part of the Company's large Baffin Island Gold project. The new gold occurrences were first reported in the Company's NR dated September 24, 2009. Results from more than 300 channel samples are awaited, including more than 250 from the main Hbert Zone.

The new high-grade gold discoveries, called "Traciane" and "Hbert South" expand the main Hbert mineralized system, which was originally discovered in 2008 (previously reported channel sample results included 91.06 g/t gold over 1.6 m and grab samples ran up to 1388 g/t gold). The Hbert system is now more than 3.5 kilometres in strike length within a well-defined and potentially productive structural corridor that is at least 10 kilometres long. Gold was also discovered in the "Frankie Showing" and "Southeast Showing" that occur in structures parallel and sub-parallel, respectively to the main Hbert trend and provide excellent opportunity for structural repetition of this gold system. The location of these new discoveries can be found on the Hbert Prospect Area map on the Company's website.

Highlights of the surface sample results received so far:
  • At Hbert South, located close to one kilometre south of the central Hbert Zone, channel samples from quartz veins include 373.90 g/t gold over 0.25 metres, 241.30 g/t gold over 0.25 metres, 104.50 g/t gold over 0.30 metres, 98.71 g/t gold over 0.25 metres and 48.64 g/t gold over 0.44 metres and rock chip and grab samples include 442 g/t gold, 252.90 g/t gold, 134.80 g/t gold and 103.60 g/t gold.
  • At Traciane, located 1.5 kilometres north of the main Hbert Zone, first pass channel samples in quartz veins over a 100 metre outcrop exposure include 66.84 g/t gold over 0.38 metres, 31.49 g/t gold over 0.85 metres; at Traciane North, a further 100 metres to the north of Traciane, across a small pond, the veins continue with values that include 96.51 g/t gold over 0.20 metres;
Ken Leigh, President & CEO states: "These new prospects almost double the length of the Hbert Zone, demonstrate high-grade potential, and provide an exceptional basis for further expansion. There has been no drilling on this part of the district-scale Baffin Gold Property and we eagerly await the results from the infill samples on the main Hbert Zone to finalize our drill program. This new target area adds to the already impressive pipeline of gold targets, including the advanced high grade Malrok and Ridge Lake Zones that will be drilled starting in early 2010."

The results reported here are only from channel samples cut across gold-bearing quartz veins from the newly discovered Traciane and Hbert South prospects. Results for the first 125 quartz vein channel samples have been received to date. Significant assays are tabulated below. The remaining assays will be reported when available, including more than 150 channel samples from sulphide-bearing wallrock to the Traciane and Hbert South veins and more than 250 channel samples collected on the main high grade Hbert Prospect.

Photos showing a portion of the Traciane prospect and Hbert South prospect with channel sample results can be found on the Company's website. Detailed maps showing the locations of channel and grab samples for all work done in 2009 will be posted to the Company's website once they are available.

Hbert South

The new Hbert South extension contains a number of significant arsenopyrite-bearing quartz veins. A total of 86 channel samples and 25 rock chip/grab samples at several locations returned very high gold values (Table 1 and Table 3 and refer to Photo 3 on the website for general sample locations). Results for 106 channel samples collected from wallrock to the veins and arsenopyrite-bearing metasediments are awaited.

Table 1 - Hbert South Channel Samples (quartz veins only):
Showing Sample Width (m) Gold Grade (g/t)
Hbert South 0.44 48.64
Hbert South 0.20 26.64

Hbert South 0.25 8.50
Hbert South 0.25 373.90
Hbert South 0.25 11.42
Hbert South 0.25 98.71
Hbert South 0.25 4.82
Hbert South 0.25 34.01
  • The four samples in Table 1 that contain 4.82 g/t, 10.19 g/t, 28.00 g/t and 8.50 g/t gold are spaced 2 to 3 metres apart on the same quartz vein and occur over a vein strike length of 12 metres. There are no lower grade channel samples over this interval of the quartz vein.
  • The samples that contain 373.90 g/t, 11.42 g/t and 98.71 g/t gold are spaced 5 metres apart on the same quartz vein over a vein strike length of 20 metres. There are two additional channel samples in this area of the quartz vein that assayed 1.15 g/t over 0.25 m and 1.58 g/t over 0.20 m
  • The two samples that contain 34.01 g/t and 241.30 g/t gold are 10 metres apart on the same quartz vein and occur on the southern end of the best exposed Hbert South outcrop that is 100 metres x 50 metres in surface dimension.
  • The sample that runs 104.50 g/t gold is from the northern end of the best exposed Hbert South outcrop.
  • The two samples in Table 1 that contain 48.64 g/t and 26.64 g/t gold are 100 metres apart on different quartz veins, approximately 300 metres south of the other channels listed.
Traciane ProspectThe Traciane gold prospect is located 1.5 kilometre NNE along strike from the main Hbert showing. The Traciane gold prospect consists of eight vertical to bedding parallel, gold-bearing quartz-arsenopyrite veins hosted by inter-bedded greywacke and micro-conglomerate as described in the September 24 news release. The veins are exposed in an outcrop area 50 metres wide and 100 metres long. A total of 25 channel samples were cut across the veins in several locations with selected results reported in Table 2 (see Photo 1 on website for locations). A small pond to the north and overburden to the east and south limits this outcrop exposure. The vein system reappears 100 metres to the north across the pond (Traciane North), where four veins can be seen over a 40 metre width. The indicated strike extent is close to 300 metres and is open. Forty-five channel samples cut from wallrock to the veins and from arsenopyrite-bearing metasediments are awaited.

A test line of induced polarization over the southern end of Traciane shows a 200 metre wide chargeability anomaly, commencing at the edge of the vein system and extending eastward under overburden. As gold occurs with both disseminated arsenopyrite in metasedimentary units and in arsenopyrite-bearing quartz veins, a wide mineralized system is inferred to be present. The I.P. anomaly increases in strength to the east before being terminated by a lake.

Table 2 - Traciane Channel Samples (from quartz veins only):
Showing Sample Width (m) Gold Grade (g/t)
Traciane 0.30 4.34
Traciane 0.44 1.14
Traciane 0.25 3.60
Traciane 0.38 66.84
Traciane 0.30 4.69
Traciane 0.80 5.59
Traciane 0.39 21.47
Traciane 0.42 4.87
Traciane 0.85 31.49
Traciane North 0.20 96.51

Four of the samples listed, 31.49 g/t, 4.87 g/t, 21.47 g/t and 5.59 g/t, represent consecutive samples along a 10 metre vein exposure (see Photo 2).

Frankie and Southeast Showings

The Frankie and South East Showings are located 2 kilometres east and 3.5 kilometres southeast, respectively, from the Main Hbert gold zone. Both prospects host quartz-arsenopyrite-scorodite vein systems. At Frankie, the veins are sub vertical and are hosted by garnet bearing phyllite and biotite schist. At the Southeast Showing veins are both sub vertical and parallel to shallow dipping micro-conglomerate and biotite schist. Prospecting samples returned anomalous gold values, shown in Table 3.

A total of 587 soil samples were collected over the main Hbert Zone (172 samples) and Hbert South-East area (415 samples). Also, 66 large till samples were collected 35 kilometres west of the Main Hbert Zone in an area of similar geology with very little previous work. Results for the all of the soil and till samples are awaited.

The location of Hbert Zone and the other gold prospects on the 100 kilometre long Baffin Property, including the Malrok, Ridge Lake, Brent and Durette gold zones, can be found on the Commander's website and in the Company's news releases pertaining to the Baffin Island Gold Project. The property is readily accessible to tidewater, contains abundant fresh water and is located near two "Distant Early Warning" (DEW line) radar stations, each with an operational 4,000 foot airstrip.

The Baffin Gold Project is subject to a new Farm-in J.V. Agreement, announced September 3, 2009, with AngloGold Ashanti Limited's subsidiary AngloGold Ashanti Holdings Plc ("AGA") that provides AGA the option to earn an initial 51% interest in the project by funding $20 million in exploration over a six year term along with other considerations as detailed in the Company's September 3rd News Release.

GeoVector Management Inc. of Ottawa managed the field program this year. Alan Sexton, MSc, P.Geol. is the Project Manager and the Qualified Person under NI 43-101 supervised the technical aspects of the 2009 field program.

Analytical Procedures

All samples were transported to TSL Laboratories in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for analysis. The prospecting grab samples were prepared and assayed by regular assay methods for gold. These samples were crushed to minimum 70% passing 10 mesh. A 250 gram sub-sample was taken for pulverizing and the remaining reject material was returned to a labeled bag and stored. The 250 gram sub-sample was pulverized to a minimum 95% passing 150 mesh. The homogenized sample was analyzed by FA/AA using a 1 AT charge with a detection limit of 0.03 g/t Au. Any samples that assayed greater than 3 g/t Au were re-analyzed by FA/Gravimetric using a 1 AT charge with a detection limit of 0.03 g/t Au.

The channel samples containing quartz veins were prepared and assayed by metallics assay methods for gold. The samples were crushed using a primary jaw crusher to minimum 70% passing 10 mesh. The entire sample was then pulverized to a minimum 95% passing 150 mesh. A silica wash was done after each sample. A single 1 AT charge was analyzed by FA/Gravimetric with a detection limit of 0.03 g/t A on the +150 mesh material. Two 1 AT charges were analyzed by FA/Gravimetric with a detection limit of 0.03 g/t A on the -150 mesh material.

TSL Laboratories inserts certified gold standards, which are purchased from CDN Resource Labs and inserted on a routine basis. Results from all internal QC samples and repeats were reported. In addition, Commander sequentially inserts certified gold standards, which are purchased from CDN Resource Labs, and "blank" rock samples. One standard and one blank were inserted with every batch of 5 channel samples prior to shipment to TSL Laboratories.

All the certified standards inserted by Commander in the channel and grab samples from the Hbert Zone all returned gold values within the accepted limits of the standards inserted.

All the blanks inserted by Commander in the channel and grab samples from the Hbert Zone all returned non-detected to negligible gold values.
