She says: 'A lot of young people who are here today, just weren't around during the 1989 quake. They also see it as a low probability event. And they see earthquake insurance doubling their premiums. Last week, EDR Insight's Dianne Crocker moderated a panel of economists at the 2nd annual Strategic Real Estate & Lending Summit in Manhattan. Experts from Cushman & Wakefield, Savills Studley and REIS shared their mid-year market updates on a range of topics including lending, property investment, the CMBS sector and economic growth. Collectively, the panel put the audience of lenders and brokers at ease that the slower-than-expected start to 2016 should not be interpreted to mean anything is inherently wrong with the market. Also noteworthy is that EDR's Marketing Director for Lending Solutions, Gary Kulik, was honored with the conference MVP Award. 'Like a nucleus, Gary Kulik is the center of the planning committee, a driving force that directs ideas, but is always completely respectful of other team members, and is truly like a nuclear explosion-full of unbridled energy,' in comments made by Art Saitta, Conference Chairperson and Assistant VP of Ridgewood Savings Bank.

In a Wall Street Journal blog, Mike Bird is writing about the imminent Brexit vote, noting that asset managers are paying more attention to what the bookmakers are saying than the opinion polls. Dhaval Joshi, Chief Strategist at BCA Research, points out that opinion polls got it wrong in the UK's last two major plebiscites - the September 2014 Scottish referendum on independence, and the May 2015 general election. Joshi said: 'The final opinion polls suffered a very significant and near-identical 3% underestimate of the ultimate desire for status quo.' Analysts expect the pound to rally if Britain votes to stay in the EU, and drop significantly if voters elected to leave.

A group of leading economists has been discussing monetary policies and interest rates at the kick-off session for this week's International Pension Conference of Montreal (IPCM). Session moderator Clement Gignac, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at Industrial Alliance, set the tone when he said a new approach is needed to tackle the challenges faced by central banks. Peter Berezin, Chief Strategist, Global Investment Strategy at BCA Research, also contributed to the debate, saying: '...though austerity has been the name of the game in recent years, governments will start loosening the purse strings, bringing us from a deflationary world to an inflationary one. Everything central banks have done over the last 70 years sounded implausible. Before they did it.'
