DuPont DD announced that DuPont Industrial Biosciences has signed a multi-year contract with Quad County Corn Processors (“QCCP”) for supplying enzymes to facilitate the latter’s Cellerate process. This process helps produce cellulosic biofuel from corn kernel fiber.
In 2014, QCCP, produced the nation’s first cellulosic ethanol (a biofuel produced from the inedible parts of plants) gallons and the world's first gallons from corn kernel fiber using its own proprietary process, supported by DuPont enzyme technology.
According to QCCP Chief Engineer Travis Brotherson, DuPont enzymes have continuously outperformed products from competitors by increasing cellulosic ethanol and corn oil yield in QCCP’s Cellerate process. QCCP uses DuPont’s Optimash line of enzymes, specialized for use in the corn fiber cellulosic application from DuPont’s Accellerase range of cellulosic enzymes.
QCCP, which presently makes 35 million gallons of grain ethanol annually, is targeting a maximum of 4 million gallons of advanced biofuel production per year with the help of new cellulosic “bolt-on” technology. Moreover, QCCP, which produces 2 million gallons of biofuel per year from cellulose conversion, now expects to produce an extra 2 million gallons of biofuel per year after a C5 yeast approval.
In addition to advanced enzyme technology, DuPont is an expert in the animal nutrition sector, helping organizations like QCCP to yield maximum value from their co-products. DuPont offers multiple solutions, starting from advanced biofuels technology licensing to delivering customized solutions in both enzyme technology and co-product production for ethanol producers.
DuPont is looking forward to joining QCCP this fall, with its own cellulosic ethanol biorefinery, to be operational in Nevada, IA from Oct 30. The facility is said to be the largest in the world, with a production capacity of 30 million gallons of cellulosic biofuel from corn stover collected from local farmers in the region.
DuPont’s shares rose around 1% to close at $57.27 on Oct 16.
Other well-placed companies in the diversified chemical space include Marrone Bio Innovations, Inc. MBII, Koppers Holdings Inc. KOP and Albemarle Corporation ALB.
