U.S. stocks fell Tuesday as an early advance fizzled in the last hour of trading. Energy stocks rose with the price of oil, while consumer discretionary stocks were among the biggest decliners. Utility stocks also dragged down the major indices.
On Tuesday:
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 5.43 points, or 0.03 percent, to 17,875.42.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 4.29 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,076.33.
The Nasdaq composite fell 7.08 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,910.23.
For the week:
The Dow is up 112.18 points, or 0.6 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 9.37 points, or 0.5 percent.
The Nasdaq has gained 23.30 points, or 0.5 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 52.35 points, or 0.3 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 17.43 points, or 0.9 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 174.18 points, or 3.7 percent.
