EVANSVILLE, Ind., June 12, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Central Indiana residents affected by the recent flooding are receiving emergency relief from American Red Cross chapters, and Vectren Corporation (NYSE: VVC) is doing its part to help by committing $50,000 in financial aid to the local Red Cross chapters in areas devastated by the flooding and matching employee donations up to an additional $25,000 for a total commitment of $75,000.
"We are committed to providing emergency relief to the affected residents in the communities we serve and helping ensure their basic needs -- food, water and shelter -- are met," said Niel C. Ellerbrook, Vectren chairman and CEO. "The massive flooding over the past few days has impacted thousands -- many of whom are our family, friends and neighbors -- and this commitment of financial assistance is not only a responsibility we see fit to do but simply the right thing to do."
Thousands of homes and numerous roads in its Vectren North service territory have been completely submerged. Some roads and homes have been swept away all together with the flash flooding, which makes some areas completely impassable right now. People were instructed to evacuate last Saturday, of whom many sought emergency shelter at local Red Cross organizations.
"We estimate about 3,500 of our customers from Terre Haute to Columbus have been impacted by gas service interruptions and many more by the flooding waters," Ellerbrook said. "I am very proud of our crews who have been working around the clock to restore service, but more is needed. We all need to play some role in Hoosiers helping Hoosiers."
