Debasing the US nickel to less "costly" alloys will be the last of the US coinage to be debased by Congress. The US nickel as it stands today has been unchanged since first minted in 1866. How quickly we'll get to 100% circulating paper fiat is the unknown. The history of US coinage debasement is clear testimony that the congress has never been serious about a balanced budget in this past century.
