The Muruntau mine was brought into production and the nearby town of Zarafshan was constructed in the late 1960s by the Former Soviet Union. The present open pit, mill and refinery have been processing ore since that time. The mine was the largest gold producer in the Soviet Union, accounting for approximately 30 percent of its production.
