Well finally all illusion of any passivity on the part of Vladimir Putin and Russia’s covetous ambition to re-absorb the Ukraine into a burgeoning Soviet republic has been definitively destroyed. Switching from ‘it wasn’t me’ to ‘you best not mess with nuclear me’ proves once again how ill-advised a dovish stance on the part of the west is again.

The not even thinly veiled threat comes at a time when the world’s self-appointed police chief- the USA – is fully engaged (albeit clandestinely) with the problem of ISIS in the Middle East. One has to wonder how much of Obama’s hands off attitude toward Russia was a result of fears that the U.S. could easily find itself overcommitted on several fronts should Russia the Bear turn aggressive. Putin, recognizing that fact, and probably feeling a little bit cornered now that his hands have been irrefutably caught in the cookie jar, has opted (predictably) for the tightrope act between being left to devour his prey and provoking the west into a response it can’t afford to not to execute.

That all this comes ahead of the West’s Labour Day break is likely no coincidence either. Putin is gambling more than a little that the long weekend will provide exactly the window of opportunity he needs to consolidate his grip on Ukraine, thus forcing Porshenko to sue for peace – an outcome that will most certainly redraw the borders of the Ukraine.

Putin’s flimsy premise of protecting Russians being persecuted in a foreign land are about as laughable as pigs on the wing. If the premise was valid, we’d all be speaking Chinese by now. The one right expatriates irrevocably give up – unless their intentions are aggressive – is to interfere in a host country’s sovereignty. Besides being the height of bad manners, it is the inciting incident for war, as we are now seeing.

NATO Better Get Tough

While Ukraine is not a member of NATO, the West’s insistence that that minor detail disentitles it to the military assistance of democratic members of NATO flies in the face of the spirit of NATO. In fact, after Ukraine Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said the Ukraine would seek to obtain full membership in NATO, a NATO spokesperson said, “Ukraine is not an ally. Nato may respect Ukraine’s decision if it seeks membership but the Alliance is not going to accelerate in that direction.”

If NATO were to grant Ukraine membership, they would immediately become obliged to join the war against Russia in Ukraine’s defence. Obviously, NATO is diplomatically skirting what could easily become the catalyst for a broader war including Europe and the United States against Russia.

America especially, who claims the moral high ground of defender of the oppressed (at least when there’s a clear economic advantage to doing so), is in danger of being painted the hypocrite in this situation, for if ever there was a nation of oppressed people being economically persecuted, it is certainly the Ukraine. Arguably Eastern Europe’s largest economy, the geopolitical implications of a western aligned and protected Ukraine cannot be understated. Putin has gone just a bit too far, and can now easily be anointed “Rogue State” with his utterances of nuclear warfare.

And that is exactly the stance the West must adopt. This is the chance not just to consolidate the NATO container around Russia, but it is the opportunity also to undermine decisively Putin’s franchise within Russia. For as we all know, there will be no winners in a Nuclear confrontation. Suggesting nuclear warheads as a legitimate weapon in this day and age is tantamount to incompetence.

Plus, Russia is not so nuclear anymore as it would like us to believe.

When the Soviet Union fell to pieces, the first order of business was to start dismantling the country’s nuclear arsenal, which has been finding its way into nuclear power facilities as fuel around the world for the last 30 years.

What nuclear weapons is Putin referring to? Plus, if I were a Russian and my president threatened nuclear war with the allied west, I would be forced to drop everything and seek his ouster from office, and possibly his incarceration in a loony bin as well.

NATO had best stop dithering and strike decisively against Russian interests to demonstrate a unified resolve to stop forcefully Putin’s hegemonic ambitions. If if doesn’t, get ready for World War III.

Sadly James West is (supposedly) Canadian. For all intents and purposes he is thoroughly American. I cant think of any commentator here that closer mimics the spew of shite (from Wikipedia - Shite is also a common variant in British English and Irish English. As a slang term, it has many meanings, including: nonsense, foolishness, something of little value or quality, trivial and usually boastful or inaccurate talk, or a contemptible person. It may also be used as an expression of annoyance, surprise, or anger, and has other usages as well.) that comes from Washington. But most times when commenting on anything, what James wrights, shite refers to the other use for the word.

James West has on many occasions made a complete fool of himself here, he seems completely oblivious of how completely stupid his ramblings are. Even if he were to tune into the mainstream media he would have a better understanding of the Ukrainian situation.

I agree with other people who comment here that West should be removed from the list of contributors here. Keeping this mongrel around only tarnishes the site. I understand that the owners of this site wish to generate commentary, even some controversy, but with West there is never anything more than a lowering of the collective IQ of all commentators.

James overlooks anything that suggests the US is at fault for everything that is and has taken place in the Ukraine the last few months. Like a typical DC shill he points at everyone else in the world for it s troubles. That multiple hundreds of thousands of people want the Ukraine to re-join with Russia never enters the pea sized brain currently occupying West's cranial cavity. There's no mention that the Ukrainian military is responsible for shooting down the Malaysian airliner. Basically if DC says its true James West will bet his life on it, a true DC shill.

Please admins, at least consider taking some action that would limit how people find their way to the bogus crap this guy posts.

What a completely misguided view or should I state what a perfect piece of US propaganda. Mr. West I would suggest that you read the latest excellent article by Mr. Michael Rozeff titled: "The US Ambition to rule the world". This is not only factual but a perfect summation of US foreign policy that has become increasingly aggressive and unreasonable. The ratings of your article vs. Mr. Rozeff's article by this well informed community of readers clearly side with Mr. Rozeff. I only wished the American public was this well informed.

Come on! Another warmonger asking for military action, justifying with manipulations and lies. If you want objetive truths, the US has promoted a cup in Ukraine, Nuland has nominated the Prime Minister and NATO is bulling Russia. Yes, is quite funny when US gets rid of a president he doesn't like, put in place a selected president, and then the new president ask for military support from NATO, and even seek to obtain NATO membership.

In my view, given the intensity of the attack that occident is carrying over Russia (yes, attack, not only military but political, journalistic, diplomatic and finantial), what is susprising the calm and moderate response given by Russia.

Americans have to know that the rest of the world were aware that they were attacking Irak for their own interest, using lies as justification (remember french fries?). And by the same token we are aware of their involvement in the crisis of Ukraine. Every conflict (Libia, Siria, etc.) the lies and manipulations of american intelligency agencies are more obvious and have less effect, as in the case of Ukraine.

In another comment if you want we can discuss the hipocrisy of the author. He says Russia cannot protect russians if they are in another soberan country, while at the same time americans can be involved anywere in the world to 'protect' americans, and even can launch a war in the other extreme of the world because 2 americans have been killed.

Please americans, don't listen to those people spreading lies, hatred and fear. Read the articles from Ron Paul about the true nature of the involvement of US in foreign countries, and its consequences.

"Putin’s flimsy premise of protecting Russians being persecuted in a foreign land are about as laughable as pigs on the wing. "

800K+ refuges have fled Ukraine for Russia since Kiew began shelling residential areas..unleashing white phosporous...and committing other war crimes against the Russian speaking population...as part of the effort to clear the area for fracking.

I don't think this author should attempt to write about the Ukraine / Russian conflict any more. His comments are so biased...uninformed...just flat our wrong....as to be dangerous.

Two americans killed in front of TV (for the sake of the argument lets suppose this is true) can justify a 'Global War on Terror' from the americans, in any country in the world they desire. But Ukranian government is bombing and shelling in East Ukraine that is killing hundreds of civilians and making more than 800K refuges, and west world doesn't say anything, nor the UN Security Council.

When Gadaffi battled the insurgents (yeah, the same people that US want to battle now), the argument that he was "bombing civilians" was enaugh to justify the bombing of Lybia from US, France and UK, and eventually the assesination of Gadaffi. But Poroshenko is welcomed in the meetings with the UN and NATO.

Western hypocrisy has no limits.
