James Ledbetter's new book, "One Nation Under Gold," has a chapter humorously detailing the U.S. government's paranoia about the monetary metal even back in the 1950s and '60s, before the government resorted to gold sales, swaps, and leases for price suppression. The chapter tells the strange story of a golden rooster in Nevada that was prosecuted for violating the Gold Reserve Act of 1934.
